Misc Stuff

Couple things

1) Check out http://www.MSFHQ.com  ,  This is the main site and the one I will be developing. I am working on an auto redirect for the site, but until then I will maintain both of the sites.

2) Join the Linkedin Group! Has over 40 members now and growing. The main drive and focus for me in creating this site is to get all of us MSF students and alumni together. There is power in numbers and hopefully we can all do our part in promoting the degree!

3) I will be doing an interview with someone at Villanova about their MSF program. Please let me know if there is anything specific you want asked. I will hopefully have something up soon.

Busy

August 10, 2010 2 comments

Quick little post. I am setting up a conversation with a Claremont adcom. That should happen in the next couple days. I will be in Philadelphia on the 12th, NYC on the 13th and back to Philly for the weekend. Pretty busy next couple of days.

Hope to have a handful of school reviews for everyone this week. I am toying with a couple of ideas to enhance this site also. We will see.

MSF Head Quarters

August 9, 2010 Leave a comment

http://www.MSFHQ.com

Well ladies and gentlemen, here is the new domain name. MS in Finance is a popular name apparently so I tried to find something both short and conveying of the sites main goal. I think Masters in Finance Head Quarters pretty much sums up my goal of the site.

This site will be the main site for the immediate future. You can follow my tweaking and modification if you like. Any suggestions for the new site are always welcome.

Update 8/7/2010

August 7, 2010 Leave a comment

Ok, here is a quick update.

1) I updated the MSF program costs. About 60 schools represented. Not everyone, but I think it will give you a quick idea of what different schools cost

2) The LinkedIn group is now over 30 members. I think that is pretty good considering the relatively newness of this site. Please join if you have not already done so. Here is the link:

3) A comment on some programs I have been finding. I just found 3 MSF programs that I decided against posting. I could not find any accreditation and some of them looked like scams. I only want to post reputable programs. Hence my lack of online programs as well as my omission of some programs. I take time and look at each of these sites. The last thing I want to do is promote or provide web traffic for any program looking to scam someone.

4) Reviews. I have a couple out and I am waiting for them to be returned. I have been contacting adcoms to get more information on the various programs. This is going to be a long term project, but I hope as the site grows I will eventually draw the attention of these various schools who will want to provide more information. If anyone would like to talk about their school or why they chose to go to XYZ please feel free to contact me>

MSinFinance@Gmail.com

I will be getting a real deal web address for this site in the next week. Currently finalizing the domain name I want. Once that is done I will get some hosting and really make this site something work visiting. More to come.

Update

August 5, 2010 Leave a comment

So I am starting to contact adcoms, trying to get interviews or additional information for everyone. I imagine in the next couple weeks I will start posting some Q&A’s. I am moving along with the student reviews also so keep a look out for more of them in the coming weeks.

I am also compiling an excel sheet of all the programs, their links, average GPA & GMAT scores, etc. Hopefully it will be something prospective students can download and utilize in their search.

More to follow.

Slow couple of days

August 1, 2010 Leave a comment

It has been a slow could of days, I apologize. I have some emails sent out for reviews of various programs and I am waiting to get them back. Hopefully this coming week will provide some good reviews.

I would like to let everyone know that I will be registering a domain name and moving over to WordPress.org in the next month or so. This will allow for a much cleaner user experience as well as more material .

The LinkedIn group is humming along. It has over 20 members and counting. Here is a link for anyone interested in signing up.

I am also blogging over on Quantnet for anyone interested:

Things to look for when researching MSF programs

July 30, 2010 1 comment

Ok, well I am going to do some real blogging now that my mass onslaught of MSF schools have been posted.

The MSF is a great degree, but it is also a unique degree. I think the first thing you have to do when you decide you want to get an MSF is sit down and decide what your ultimate goal is.

Why do I say find out what you ultimately want to do? Because MSF programs are regional. Villanova places almost entirely in a tri state area (NY,NJ,PA). Vanderbilt places very well down south (as well as elsewhere) and BC will place well in Boston and NYC.

So if you want to work in Florida and you are planning on going to UIUC or Purdue you might want to re think your plans.

The second thing is really find out about the program. You don’t want to go to a program that is 100% made up of foreign students. Nothing against international kids, but you need a mix. You learn from your peers as much as from your professors.

Additionally, foreign students are tough to place in this economy because of sponsorship issues. A large amount of your class not getting placed means a weak alumni base and no recruiting presence. Not a good thing. Also look to see if the program pulls all from the undergraduate program or is there is a mix of schools. This is not an absolute rule, but I think it adds something to an MSF program to have a variety of undergraduate institutions represented. To each their own though.

This leads me to the third thing. Placement. Unless you are just a perpetual student or want a PhD you’re going to want a job sooner or later. That means recruitment. Look into how many people are placed each year and try and find out who comes on campus. As far as I know not too many places had dedicated MSF recruitment so start by looking at undergraduate recruiting. If the program you go to has a solid MBA program check out their recruiting also. A lot of companies, especially in the corp finance space, look at a MSF the same as an MBA so you might be able to get an MBA position without that extra year of school.

Also, check out the alumni base of the school. I am a devoted alumni to both Syracuse and Villanova and can attest to how helpful they are. I think it stems from the sports program and strong student spirit on campus. Regardless, wherever you go you want to know that a cold email to an MD will be replied to because he loves helping out his alma mater.

Finally, look at the cost. If you want to break into corporate finance you probably don’t need to spend a fortune. If you want to break into investment banking then spending 80K at MIT might be a worthwhile investment. We are finance people. Think ROI, break even, opportunity cost, PV/FV. I love school, but if you are getting into debt to go back you sure as hell better make sure you can get a return on your investment.

After all, that is what school is, an investment in yourself!

Good luck and happy hunting.
